Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the option to contest particular calls made by the official, echoing the practice already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
